Joshua Tree is a Magical Place (Ryan Post @ The Integratron)

Ryan Post and the Integratron

I have a booth at the Joshua Tree Farmers Market where I sell photographs and cards.

One Saturday, Ryan Post happened to walk into my booth. He introduced himself and we began to chat. He mentioned that he was going to the Integratron that evening to give a performance on his Terapan - for a private sound bath. He then asked if I would like to attend as his guest (We had only met 15 minutes earlier).

Of course, I said yes.

The integratron is an acoustically perfect structure. Since your body is about 60% water, sound waves penetrate your body and actually massage you from within. It's amazing!

Ryan gave an amazing performance on his Terapan instrument. It has the sound of steel drums - in a compact form factor.

Ryan is an amazing musician - and individual. I felt that the best way to represent Ryan on film was to go psychedelic.

I created this tribute to Ryan over the weekend - I hope you enjoy:

”Joshua Tree”

I spent the morning at Bobby Furst's place chatting with Ryan Post. Thanks to Bobby Furst! (And sorry for blocking the driveway!)

There is an amazing rocky hill behind Bobby Furst's (You can see Bobby's place behind Ryan).

I was chatting with Ryan and I told him I wanted to interview him - on the hill behind Bobby's in the morning. Ryan smiled and told me that the hill is one of his most special places in JT.

Let's go then...

BOBBY FURST

THE UNOFFICIAL MAYOR OF JOSHUA TREE

Bobby created an amazing space in the middle of the desert - for one reason - to bring together the Community of Joshua Tree. His space, "Furst Wurld", showcases local artists, musicians, filmmakers, photographers and community groups.

Furst Wurld has become famous as an underground venue. You will see lots of Furst Wurld in our documentary. Thanks Bobby!

Filming Megan Hutch

Meeting Megan Hutch

I was at the Joshua Tree Saloon last Christmas with a friend. As usual, there were a group of local musicians performing that night. They were performing Joe Cocker cover songs (In honor of the day he died in 2014). Surprisingly, Joe Cocker covered a lot of great songs in his day, but, of course, "With a Little Help from My Friends" is his masterpiece.

Each song was covered by a different singer, and for "With a Little Help...", one Megan Hutch picked up the microphone. Megan seemed pretty small on stage for such a massive song - that is - until she started to sing.

WOW!

She blasted out the lyrics, larger than life! She silenced the Saloon with her voice and her stage presence (not an easy feat). I don't need to make comparisons to other female singers from the past - THIS WAS MEGAN HUTCH

It wasn't until a few months later that our paths crossed again. Megan was performing at lunch in the Saloon. Introductions were made.

To kick off my Music Documentary Project - Megan was my first choice. After listening to her CD constantly on a road trip, I got a vision for how to film "Surrender" - a daunting 7+ minute song.

Megan and I met and worked out the story line - a post-breakup song. From there we planned out a shooting schedule, scouted out some locations in JT, and then we began filming.

Special Thanks to Camille at the Joshua Tree Saloon for giving us access for filming - It's a perfect location.
